I agree that joining one is better then starting your own. It takes more work then people anticipate. My step-mother has just given over ownership of her non-profit organization, she ran it for 14 years. I can say from personal experience that everyday there is a new challenge and headache when it comes to running a non-profit orgination.
I think there is a lot of money that is lost when you are starting your own non-profit, and it is hard to find a bunch of people that are willing to participate for the same cause. I think joining a non-profit organization creates a bigger impact because there are usually a lot more people involved which creates more power.
